Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Should Pay For Their Own Security, According To 80K Canadians Who Signe

Ever since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced that they were stepping back as senior members of the royal family and will be splitting their time between the UK and Canada, a lot of the debate has been centered around who will pay for their security. Providing a full-time security detail for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will cost millions, and a new online petition has made it clear that Canadian taxpayers don’t want to foot the bill.

According to Page Six, in just six days, more than 80,000 Canadians signed an online petition started by the fiscally conservative Canadian Taxpayer Federation demanding that Harry and Meghan pay for their own security when they are in the Great White North.

Harry and Meghan want the chance to make their own money so they can be financially independent, and they agreed to no longer accept public funds from UK taxpayers through the Sovereign Grant. However, while they transition into their new lives, Prince Charles has reportedly agreed to provide private funds for the couple for one year.

Still, that leaves the question of who will pay for security. As a rule, when members of the royal family are in Canada, officers from the London Metropolitan Police accompany them for security. But, that’s not going to be possible with Harry and Meghan – plus their eight-month old son, Archie Harrison – living in Canada for months out of the year.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are currently staying in a friend’s private mansion on Vancouver Island, but Aaron Wudrick – the federal director of the Canadian Taxpayer Federation – says that Canadians shouldn’t be forced to support them.

“Canadians are pleased to welcome the Duke and Duchess to Canada, but have made it crystal clear that taxpayers should not be forced to support them while they are living here,” said Wudrick. “All Canadians wish them well as they realize their ambition of financial independence.”

The group delivered the petition with the 80,000 signatures to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s office on Tuesday.

Amid the Megxit scandal and the debate about who will pay for what, Bruce Hallsor from the Monarchist League of Canada said that there doesn’t seem to be “any expectation” from the royal family that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will receive money from the Canadian taxpayer.
