Broadmeadows, Melbourne: Woman fights off alleged carjacker

A woman with two children strapped into her car has been forced to fight off an attempted carjacker in Melbourne’s north.

Police say the 33-year-old woman was driving a Toyota Kluger through Broadmeadows on May 3 at around 5.30pm when she stopped in traffic on Coleraine St.

An 18-year-old man allegedly approached the vehicle, opening a rear passenger door and climbed inside while two children were seated inside the SUV.

Immediately jumping out of the car, the woman ran to the side where the man had entered and attempted to pull him out of the vehicle, according to police.

After pushing the woman to the ground, he proceeded to climb over the centre console and into the driver’s seat.

Police say that once in the front seat, the man tried to lock the car’s doors; however, the woman managed to get into the front passenger seat before he could do so.

The man then started driving the SUV down Pascoe Vale Rd while the woman attempted to wrestle control of the vehicle off the intruder, according to police.

He will appear before Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, May 4.
